Fresenius Kabi continues to partner with researchers to improve patient care

Dr. Sandra Emily Stoll from Cologne, Germany, is this year’s 2024 ESICM – Fresenius Kabi Clinical Nutrition Award winner

October 8, 2024

Fresenius Kabi is committed to advancing patient care for acutely and chronically ill patients and actively supports research in medical nutrition. Our clinical nutrition research grant is connected to the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) and is the only award in the ESICM environment with a focus on medical nutrition.

We are excited to announce that Dr. Sandra Emily Stoll, a Senior Physician at the Clinic for Anesthesiology and Surgical Intensive Care Medicine, University Hospital Cologne, Germany, is the recipient of this year’s €20,000 grant for her project titled ‘Impact of Cyclic Enteral Daytime Feeding with Ketogenic Nighttime Fasting on Postoperative Delirium in Critically Ill Patients (DeliKet-Study)’.

The award was handed over at LIVES 2024 in Barcelona, the 37th annual ESICM congress. The congress is attended by more than 5,000 intensive care physicians, anesthetists and further healthcare professionals from around the world and showcases the latest advances in patient care through discussions, talks, interactive courses and demonstrations.

Despite all care, postoperative delirium remains a common problem, especially in elderly critically ill patients. This can be a traumatic experience for patients and their relatives, and it is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Maintaining a circadian daily pattern, including cyclic feeding and fasting, is thought to positively affect the gut microbiome and activate repair processes. This study project investigates the role of equicaloric cyclic enteral feeding (12 hours during daytime) compared to continuous standard enteral nutrition (24 hours), and will assess patient-centered parameters such as signs of delirium and cognitive function.

‘’The grant from ESICM- Fresenius Kabi will be a major kickstart- support for the infrastructure of this study and moreover, the grant is a massive opportunity to increase the visibility of the project and to increase the willingness of other centers to join this novel and interesting project’’, said Dr. Sandra Stoll, Germany.

At Fresenius Kabi, we strive to care for patients when they are at their most vulnerable – when they are critically or chronically ill. Fresenius Kabi is proud to partner with Dr. Stoll, supporting research that allows us to continue working towards putting the best-possible solutions in the hands of medical professionals, enabling them to address the challenges they and their patients face today.

Further commitment to improve patient care at LIVES 2024, the 37th annual ESICM congress in Barcelona, Spain

Medical meetings are an important opportunity for researchers and healthcare professionals to share their experiences and new learnings. This can be further supported through continued education, including peer-to-peer training programs.

Satellite symposium: Navigating Nutritional Pathways: Insights from a patient’s journey

In addition to our commitment through the Clinical Nutrition Award, Fresenius Kabi is hosting a satellite symposium at LIVES 2024, titled 'Navigating Nutritional Pathways: Insights from a Patient’s Journey,'. The symposium, taking place on 8th October 2024 (16:00 to 17:00 CEST), includes expert presentations from Prof. Mette Berger, Prof. Christian Stoppe and Dr. Karolien Dams who share their knowledge on optimizing outcomes for critically ill patients through medical nutrition therapy.

Medical Nutrition Fellowship Grant support

Fresenius Kabi proudly supports three fellowships accompanied by the ESICM web course on Nutrition and Critical Illness. The first fellowship already took place in Belgium, with the next two planned in Germany and Sweden. The fellowships will give awardees the opportunity to experience real-life critical care nutrition scenarios, learning directly from experts in the field. These fellowships are awarded to the top ESICM web course performers, the top 10 performers being from Argentina, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland, Tanzania and Thailand.

Patient care, especially in the complex field of nutrition, requires a multidisciplinary team approach.
