Safeguarding Tomorrow: Our Commitment to Fight Antimicrobial Resistance
Antibiotics are medicines that prevent and fight bacterial infections in humans and animals, which constitute an important pillar in modern medicine. However, by misusing and overusing antibiotics, there is a risk that microorganisms gain ability to withstand antimicrobial treatments, which limits the options to treat infections in the future. That’s why everyone in the healthcare system – doctors, nurses, but also drug suppliers – have a huge responsibility in the provisioning and production of antibiotics.
Fresenius Kabi, as one of the leading manufacturers of intravenously administered generic antibiotics, takes its responsibility seriously. Since 2020, we are a member of the AMR Industry Alliance and collaborate throughout the industry to fight against antimicrobial resistance. As a member, we strive to follow the guidelines of Antibiotic Manufacturing Standard. The Standard marks the formalization of the Alliance’s 2018 Common Antibiotic Manufacturing Framework, which described a risk-based approach to assess and control antibiotic manufacturing waste streams. We are implementing appropriate measures and controls for the discharge of wastewater at our respective sites.
We also hold annual global meetings designed for the purpose of sharing awareness, knowledge exchange about best practices presented by production units, and providing the latest updates on the ever-evolving AMR landscape. Facilitated by a dedicated communication channel, this robust global AMR community encourages the effortless exchange of knowledge, encompassing best practices in responsible antibiotic manufacturing and raising awareness. It serves as a hub for both antibiotic production units and the global team to collaborate and share insights.
We are also in regular exchange with the Access to Medicine Foundation about the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Benchmark. Here we are being regularly evaluated in the categories Appropriate Access, Stewardship, and Responsible Manufacturing.
