Normal Saline

  • Sodium Chloride Injection, IP is indicated as a source of water and  electrolytes in depletion as in diarrhea, alkalosis (vomiting), excessive diuresis & excessive perspiration.
  • As a priming solution in hemodialysis procedures.
  • Hypovolaemic shock – In trauma patients when patients glycemic status not known
  • Initial fluid therapy in Diabetic ketoacidosis, hyponatremia
  • As irrigation fluid

  • 1 liter of fluid contains Na= 154mEq, Cl= 154mEq,

Warnings
  • Sodium Chloride Injection, IP should be used with great care, if at all in patients with congestive heart failure, severe renal insufficiency, and in clinical states in which there exists edema with sodium retention.
  • In patients with diminished renal function, administration of Sodium  Chloride Injection, IP may result in sodium retention

Precautions
  • Clinical evaluation and periodic laboratory determinations are necessary to monitor changes in fluid balance, electrolyte concentrations and acid base balance during prolonged parenteral therapy or whenever the condition of the patient warrants such evaluation.
  • Caution must be exercised in the administration of Sodium Chloride Injection, IP to patients receiving corticosteroids or corticotropin

  • During vomiting and diarrhea, along with water loss,
  • there is a substantial loss of NaCl. Isotonic saline (0.9%) is very useful to correct
  • both fluid and electrolyte deficit. As isotonic saline is distributed chiefly in extra
  • cellular fluid, it will increase intravascular volume substantially
